Edina normally marks Independence Day with its traditional Fourth of July parade, concert, and fireworks. For 2020, we will be hosting a virtual parade experience, with clips from community and entertainment groups, and tributes to grand marshals. The parade will be broadcast on Comcast channels 15 and 16 at 10 a.m. and posted on the City of Edina's YouTube channel.
We had hoped to host a central children's parade, but since Minnesota state guidelines are set at 25 or fewer for outdoor events, we've added a few other ways for us to connect and celebrate Independence Day 2020....
July 4th Schedule of Events
Watch the parade on Comcast channel 15 and 16 at 10 a.m and on the City of Edina's YouTube channel.
Theme: Anniversary Celebrations
This year's theme honors four historic celebrations (in addition to our country's 244th!): The Edina Crime Prevention Fund, First John Philip Sousa Memorial Band, and the Human Rights and Relations Commission celebrate 50 years, while the League of Women Voters Edina celebrates the 100th anniversary of the League of Women Voters. Representatives from all four groups will be interviewed as parade grand marshals.
The 2020 Fireworks have been cancelled. (Stay Safe MN Guidelines for Phase III, which started June 10, set a guideline for groups of 25 or less outdoors.)
New offerings for 2020:
Do It Yourself Neighborhood Parade Kits
We're offering DIY parade kits so you can organize a children's parade in your neighborhood. Kits are candy bags and small flags. Gather your neighbors and plan something local. A parade volunteer will deliver your order to you the week of the 4th. Sign up today to get your neighborhood parade kit! Order deadline is July 1. (1,000 kits are available)
We'd love to share the photos of your neighborhood parade. Email your favorite picture to firstname.lastname@example.org or post on your social accounts using the hashtag #EdinaParade2020. We'll share them to our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, and maybe use them next summer when we hope to host a children's parade before the main 2021 Edina Parade.
We're putting together a photo contest so you can snap a pic dressed up in your Independence Day gear, or one of your kids, or maybe a pic of your decorated front door or porch. We'll be awarding prizes and posting the winners on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.
Email photos to email@example.com by July 2. Winners will be announced on July 4th!
