Nature in the City at Cedars of Edina - A Certified Wildlife Habitat
Wildlife Habitat certification is achieved by creating a space that provides food, water, shelter, and a place for wildlife to raise young while also using sustainable practices.
To qualify, a yard or outdoor space must meet five criteria:
- Provide at least 3 food sources (for example, seeds, berries, nectar)
- Provide at least 1 clean water source such as a birdbath or pond
- Provide at least 2 sources of shelter/cover such as shrubs or rock piles
- Provide at least 2 spaces for wildlife to raise young such as trees, nesting boxes, and burrows
- Use sustainable practices such as using native plants, avoiding pesticides, and removing invasive species.
Species that make Cedars their home:
Squirrels (grey, red, white), Chipmunks, and Rabbits
Birds (hummingbirds, wrens, cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, robins, bluejays, woodpeckers, goldfinch, doves, blackbirds, crows, ducks, herons, turkeys, hawks, and owls)
Turtles
Insects (butterflies, moths, dragonflies, bees)
Which animals and insects have you seen in the great Cedars backyard? Photos welcome!
